Power and the Smoking Room of Martindale Hall—Tour the 3D Virtual Twin.
Authors: Penny edmonds
On 22 May 2024 our team presented at the South Australian History Festival. The theme of the festival was ‘Power’. The event was held at Flinders University, Bedford Park.
In this popular and well-attended presentation, we took visitors through the Smoking Room’s virtual twin, our new and in-progress experimental 3D visualisation in Flinders University’s VR/motion capture studio, The Void.
The Smoking Room at Martindale Hall symbolises power and wealth. Martindale Hall is located on Ngadjuri country, which extends from what is now known as Gawler in the south of South Australia through to Koonamore in the north.
The Martindale Smoking Room is an imperial trophy room and displays the collections of the Mortlock family and their travels. It is one of a kind.
Combining the best of history, archaeology and the digital humanities, we wanted our guests to experience the Smoking Room’s collections and the extraordinary stories of this family’s tours throughout the networks of empire to India, Ceylon, New Zealand, Egypt and beyond.
This new phase of our project experiments with displaying 2D and 3D media in immersive experimental environments.
Hosted by the Assemblage Centre for Creative Arts, this event showcases research from our ARC grant ‘Slow Digitisation and the Community Heritage of Martindale Hall’ (ARC Special Research Initiative in Australian Studies) at Flinders University.
